Baptism

Taking the Next Step

What is Baptism?

Baptism is where we publicly acknowledge that we are followers and believers of Jesus Christ. At City on a Hill, we do full submersion baptism as a symbol of being washed clean and made whole in Christ.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Why be baptized?

Baptism does not save us. But it does show others that we have submitted our lives to God's direction and have placed our hope and faith in Him.

Think back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the fall of mankind.  At that point, mankind became sinful and rebellious, distancing themselves from God through willful disobedience. Because of this, there is no way for humans to restore this broken relationship with God through our own efforts. But there is great news. God loved us so much that he sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for all of our sins so that we can be forgiven and have that relationship restored. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus' death on the cross, while the power to live out this new salvation comes from His resurrection from the dead.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

Who should be baptized?

We believe that Scriptures point to baptism for those who already believe and can acknowledge their faith in Him. If you have accepted Jesus Christ and acknowledge Him as your Lord and Savior, you should be baptized. This is an important step of obedience in your Christian walk!

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19)

What about infant baptism?

Because we believe that Scriptures point to baptism for those who can make the decision  to follow Jesus and can acknowledge their faith in him,  we do not baptize infants. We believe that all infants are born as Children of God and  instead, encourage families to dedicate their child to God. Child dedication is a promise between God, parents, and a church family to raise children to know the Lord. As that child grows older, they will have the opportunity to make the decision to follow Christ and be baptized.

Show a three-year-old a rainbow and his eyes pop open, he laughs and murmurs something that sounds semi close to English; that's wonder. Show a third grader how pleasing God connects to honoring her parents and she will most likely look at you funny and continue eating her pizza; that's discovery. As a teacher, church leader, or parent you want a curriculum that will help you connect the love and worship of God to good decision-making for your elementary school students. You want something that will help them see the value of respecting authority and treating their friends like they are human, not SpongeBob®. You need it to be simple. You would love it to be flexible. You want it to suit your individual needs. Time to go to the basics. What if by the time your child reaches 6th grade they will know these five core truths:

God is the Holy Creator.
I can trust God's Word (Bible).
I can trust Jesus with everything.
I should try to live like Jesus lived (make wise choices by His Word).
The world/culture does not usually agree with God's Word.

Most kids form their entire idea of who God is, and choose whether nor not they'll have a relationship with Him before leaving 5th grade!

Sunday at a Glance

Worship

Each week the kids (ages 0-9) join us for worship in the sanctuary. After worship, the kids head to their respective classrooms to learn more about God and how to apply His word to our lives.
