Pastor Matthew, where in Old Testament scripture does it prophecy Jesus' resurrection? Jesus mentions Jonah and the fish, but if I was born of that time, how would I know it would be symbolic of Christ? I know only a couple instances of resurrecting the dead in the OT with Elijah and Elisha, but other than that I believe bringing the dead to life was more of a very rare miracle. Thanks and God Bless, my friend.
There are not specific prophecies of His resurrection in the OT, per se; however, once the apostles saw Him resurrected it is likely they began to pour through the Scriptures to find connections. Jesus mentions Jonah and there are the similarities (three days, buried/under water, rise again/spit up onto dry land). The difficulty there however, is that those who do not believe in Jesus' resurrection would be hard pressed to find the similarities, even with regard to Jesus' mention of it. With all of that said, Jesus did predict His own resurrection as recorded in John.
John 2:18-22 - 18 So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Hope that helps shine a light on it. Praying for you, Michele, and the kids!
